Happy Friday all! It’s time for some book reviews and Follow Friday. I have a great book for you today, an interesting one; and probably one I might not have ever picked up on my own. It is a love story, but it is also a fantasy. Fantasy usually isn’t my cup of tea, although I did tip my toe in the Twilight pool (but for friendship I would do most anything – except read Hunger Games and Shades of Grey, LOL). Speaking of all those trendy things here’s the question for the week…..
Q: What hyped up book did you think was not worth all the talk?
A: well, I’m sort of late on this one….but I just got around to reading it. I finally decided to make it a priority because people had been all about it, and the movie was so good. ‘Julie and Julia’. Let me just say this. If they had decided to make the movie like the book it would have been a heck of a different story. It was terrible. Not well written, highly annoying and about a million other things that were just horrible. Disappointing or sure.
but….on to something good!
Ever since Kait Swanney could remember, the old crones of the village have been warning her to stay away from the selkies. They claim that like sirens of old, the seal men creep from the inky waters, shed their skins, and entice women to their deaths beneath the North Sea. But avoiding an encounter becomes impossible when Kait is spotted at the water’s edge, moments after the murder of a half-selkie infant.
Kait obsesses over a reunion deep beneath the bay and risks her own life to be reunited with her selkie. But when she lands the dangerous lover, the chaos that follows leaves Kait little time to wonder—is it love setting her on fire or has she simply been lured?
What I thought: So this was quite an interesting read for me. I love a good love story. Seriously, I’m a full up sucker for them. I would classify this book as a Fantasy Romance, with a twist of something else. The Irish theme throughout was wonderful. The way they spoke in the book, the Irish slang, made the book even more charming. In fact, I actually started hearing myself making the accent in my head. The book was well-written – a nice easy, flowing read. The book had a sexual theme to it, being the main part of the legend of these selkies; but somehow it was able to stay clear of being raunchy. I’m kind of a prude when it comes to stuff like that, but I really appreciated how the author included it as a main part of the story, but didn’t overdo it. Fantasy usually isn’t my cup of tea. I really did enjoy this book though. The love story was beautiful and I absolutely loved the historical aspects of the book. If you enjoy a good love story I would suggest giving this book a try, even if the fantasy aspect makes you a little wary.
