Throw the Perfect Watch Party with “A Capitol Fourth!”

Fourth of July is my favorite holiday. I shamelessly {with no shame} cater to all that is a stereotypical milspouse. I love my Air Force gear, I have photos and patriotic garb all over my home, my bedroom is Americana with a giant framed picture of an Air Force plane and of the famous “Times Square Kiss” from WWII. So naturally for the 4th we go all out. I come by it honestly though, as the fourth was always a favorite holiday around my home growing up. As kids we posed by the American flag on our front porch, and wore matching shirts for years. A tradition I usually try to continue my family. Living here in DC has been really fun, especially on the fourth. Last year we went into the city and celebrated the holiday by sitting on the Mall right in front of the Washington Monument. This year, we’ll be celebrating by experiencing ‘A Capitol Fourth!’

Luckily we can celebrate in style with a watch party kit made just for the event.

Happy 4th of July from the Cammo Style Love Family!!

My favorite holiday is upon us. The special day of the year where I can go all out with the Red, White and Blue! Although, I must admit that all year long I’ve got the Patriotic vibe going on in my home. I love it. So much so that my room is decked out with a Tommy Hilfiger bedspread, statue of liberty photograph and flag pillow. What can I say, I’m a succor for it. We gather together with friends and family and celebrate this amazing country that we live in.

My family has always embraced this holiday. My mom has almost yearly photos of me and my sister on the porch with the flag…one that I try to replicate every year. We went to parades, lit our own fireworks or went out to watch them with a big group of people. There’d be BBQ chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs….the usual suspects. We would cry when we would hear Lee Greenwood sing and couldn’t have been more proud to be an American.

Now everyday is a reminder of our families connection to our country. The flag that is neatly folded in a frame honoring my husband’s service, the uniforms hung neatly in the closet and the camouflage duffel bag leaning against the wall in his office. The strong feelings of pride that I have for my husband, his career and our country have never been stronger. Its hard, don’t get me wrong; and there are days that I just don’t want to do it – but that doesn’t mean that I don’t love it with all my heart.

I hope you have a wonderful day with family and friends. Celebrate the fact that we are here in this country with freedoms that many can only dream of. I know that times may seem dark, and the road ahead for our country doesn’t seem all that great for many of us. But I still believe in it with all my heart; and I pray continuously that God blesses us and shows himself to us even in the darkest of times.

God Bless America!!

“We identify the flag with almost everything we hold dear on earth, peace, security, liberty, our family, our friends, our home. . .But when we look at our flag and behold it emblazoned with all our rights we must remember that it is equally a symbol of our duties. Every glory that we associate with it is the result of duty done.”

After you’ve recovered from your “Pin-crazy haze’ you set out to planned the most amazing party ever. Something that you could hire a professional photographer for and build your blog around. I mean, I know I’ve been there. But before the days of Pinterest I was a party planner at heart. Real parties, where things are fun, coordinate, and maybe a couple things with a little flare but you had fun. Your ideas came to you, and you figured it out. Nowadays I think people get caught up in the Pinterest craze and drive themselves crazy, setting unrealistic expectations for themselves and don’t enjoy the fun of the crafting! 1. Patriotic 7-Layer Dip from Elephant and Chic
Elephant and Chic has such fun stuff and it’s a really cute blog. I mean, four sisters who are adorable and blog! Follow them. I picked this particular pin-worthy post because it helps you create a decoration and a dish to eat. It’s great, its super easy and doesn’t take some sort of crazy crafty skill.

2. Patriotic Printables – So many good, free printables out there. I usually print one or two out for holidays on regular printer paper and stick them in one of the frames I already have up in my home. It just shakes things up and adds a pop of something with very little work. You could really do it up and have it printed out somewhere on cardstock, or even as a picture.

Wednesday Walkabout – A Patriotic Day

 photo milkidzclub_zpsf9f823ab.jpg

Happy Hump Day Ya’ll (have you seen that Geico commercial?  Oh man, I laugh so hard EVERY time I see it).  Its been two weeks since the 4th of July but I never got to share with all of you how we spent our day.  The Fourth is a difficult holiday to be so far away from my family.  It sounds silly, because I know that holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving should be hard too.  They are, don’t get me wrong, but the Fourth is really, really hard.  We are such a “tradition is important” family and we do the same things every year – parade, eat, some of us go to a movie, camp out at the fireworks viewing area way early and talk, play cards, eat dessert.  Its so much fun and I miss my parents, my sister and my Aunt and Uncle.

What I am thankful for is the new family we have found here.  It is so vital to the life of a military family (or a family that happens to move to a new location without family or a prior support group).  Last year we went to a parade in one of the nearby towns and had a BBQ and very awesome “never allowed in California or Nevada” fireworks.  Our neighbors/adopted family have taken care of us since we moved here practically and I can’t even tell you how grateful I have been for that.  This move has been way more difficult then I ever imagined it would be and without them it would have been much harder.

So, how did we spend our very Patriotic Day this year?

Walking down Constitution Avenue in DC!  Yep, you read that right!  My two oldest joined me with my awesome Blue Star Families friend while we marched down the middle of DC with the MilKidz Club.  It was such a strange and crazy experience.  I really hope that I never lose the awe-factor when it comes to living here.  Everything I do and experience almost leaves me breathless.  Visit Blue Star Families, MilKidz Club page and look for a chapter in your area.  It’s great for kids!  The organization of the parade was really good, but I thought we were there far too early, especially with small children.  I was really glad I had decided to leave Phillip home with Mr. Air Force.  They had lots of doctors and EMTs at the end of the parade with misting tents (that weren’t misting enough) and warm water and gatorade (not good).  Some local fireman also were spraying water with a huge fan that actually was so much better then the misting tents.  It really sucked that we had to walk so far to get to a metro, but other than that it went really well and I was super proud of my kids.

After that Daddy came and rescued us with Chick-Fil-A and cold water and lemonade.  We went home and rested and got ready for our friends to come over.  It still is crazy to me that we ended up living across the country with someone I’ve known since I was a Senior in High School; and my sister and his brother were very good friends.  It’s pretty crazy.  His wife is amazing and we are besties.  My neighbor and her little boy came over as well.  Then we ventured out for Fire Works this year at a local high school.  It was incredible!!!

No pics of the actual fireworks (who seriously hasn’t seen a firework), because I was actually enjoying them.  It really cracks me up to look around and see everyone with their Phones and IPads taking pictures and videos of the fireworks instead of actually watching them.  It’s a sickness seriously.

Are you a tradition person?  How was your 4th of July?!
