Halloween Care Package with Kids

Holidays are always a fun time to make care packages, its easy to find stuff to put in it and to decorate with. This time we are discussing Halloween because its just about that time. You’ve still got time to get those packages put together and sent out to your service member. Our first stop was Dollar Tree because, why not!!!?

First thing is you have to have some fluff for the package so things don’t get jostled around. We picked up some orange shredded paper and some scary Halloween fabric. It is surprisingly big and thick! It was perfect for packing some of the more delicate things I had going in this time around.

Picking up a few whimsical things for a good laugh was also important to me. It’s Halloween, a fun holiday to be like a kid. And if they hubby has to miss all the silly fun I’m going to bring as much fun to him and his pals over there as I can. So, I picked up a few plastic halloween cups with funny sayings on them. I snagged four for a dollar.

Next the kids picked out a package of pirate patches! It will be perfect for an awesome deployment picture. There is a whole row of Trick-Or-Treat alternatives or Halloween Party Favors right now at Dollar Tree and they are just the right amount of silly fun. Pack it up with hard candy that won’t melt everywhere (even though its starting to get cold here its still 90 to 110 degrees over there) and toss in a few eyeballs and you’re good to go.

Decorating a box can be tricky…so you’ve got to be creative. I cut up paper that could be taped to the flaps and let the kids draw and decorate them. They are cut out perfectly to fit over the boring brown box flaps. Other options would be colored paper or themed wrapping paper.

Make sure to decorate the outside of the box too!! It’s so much fun for the kids and it just builds up that anticipation for your service member as they are opening it!

Sending care packages is such a fun thing to do for your service member, and for you too!
What are your favorite things to include in Halloween care packages?

Halloween and Motherhood

You ever have one of those holidays where try as you might things are just off. You have a great time and the kids seem to be happy but your little mom dreams of perfection are dashed in an instant. First off, it serves me right for having one of those “Pottery Barn Kids” dreams. You know the kind. Everyone is perfectly dressed, smiling and organized for the one picture that will end up in the scrapbook or facebook. You think that somehow that picture is the memory and you want it so desperately? Yeah, that was me. It was the craziest of days. My parents had been here for almost two weeks at that point, I had to figure out two birthdays and Halloween. I know the kids don’t care, but for some crazy reason I do. I mean seriously, its so ridiculous. Please tell me I’m not alone in this? I mean, look at them. They are so happy, and had a wonderful time. Me on the other hand I let it drive me crazy. We never went to the pumpkin patch (sickness plagued us), we got our pumpkins on the 30th at like 8pm.

But yet, in spite of my crazy my children were happy and had fun. We were blessed with wonderful friends, and lucky enough to have our family here to spend the time with us. Yet, there I was being crazy mom, wanting everything to be perfect and look perfect. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy as mother. We compete against each other, what we think we should be, say and do. But yet, our own insecurities and self-doubt wage the strongest war against us.

All I have to do is look at my children, and remind myself that they are happy and that is truly all that matters.

Pear Greetings: Halloween Cards are Spook-tacular!! *review*

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

If you follow me on twitter you may have seen a couple sneak peek tweets of some Halloween themed cards I ordered.  I was trying to wait until they arrived to post my final review of them, and oh boy are they so adorable!  I’ve never ordered Halloween cards before, or really any holiday other than Christmas.  When I received the opportunity from Pear Tree Greetings, I jumped at it.  When you live far away from family and friends you want to do all you can to remain connected to them.  They can’t experience things in the same way they did before.  Pear Tree offered this sentimental gal the chance to connect family and friends with my kids at Halloween.

Isn’t this the cutest card?  So freaking adorable.  There are so many options to chose from – flip, fold out, single or double sided.  They’ve got all your holidays and major life events covered.  One of my favorite little things wasn’t even the card, it was actually the envelopes.  Even those are unique.  The cards are good quality and very reasonably priced.  These particular cards start as low as .50cents, which is a fantastic price for a good quality photo card.  The fact that these actually feel like light cardstock, and not just photo paper was quite surprising.  I wouldn’t have expected to get this quality for that reasonable of a price.  Pear Tree also offers address labels and wedding/party invitations.  If you order by 10/7 you can get 20% off on their website, which is more bang for your buck.

I’m already planning my Christmas photo card purchase from them!
There are too many to chose from?

 *look it’s a magnet!!*

Do you send out holiday card for a day other than Christmas?
Do you send out Christmas Cards?
*disclaimer: I received this product in exchange for my honest opinion and review.  I was not compensated
in any other way.  This was a partnership between Pear Tree Greetings and Tomoson.

Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-In #75

Happy Friday everyone!  I can’t believe this week is over already.  It’s already the second week of October.  Holy Cow!  My daughter will be 4 this month and my baby boy will be 1!  I’m so happy you are stopping by for another Fill-In this week.  I’m sad they aren’t every week anymore, but that just makes me all the more excited when they roll around every month!  Thanks so much to Wife of a Sailor for another great fill-in!  Much love girl!  If you are a new follower please let me know and I will happily return the favor.

1. What’s one thing you would like to change about the last month if you could?

I don’t know.  It was a pretty good month in general.  The hubby was gone a lot this last month and I would have liked to have changed that a little bit, but wouldn’t we all 😛

2. What was your favorite thing you did in September?

Well, despite the fact the hubby was gone there was so much fun to be had in the month of September!  It was the hubby’s birthday and we did a little bit of family outing adventures.  I took the kids to a couple Fall Festivals and Fairs.  And one of my good friends that I originally met on a military support forum came to visit again (I love being so close!)

3. Sometimes I like to sit on my couch and eat ______ from a ______ with a _________. – Courtesy of Just Another Snarky Navy Wife

Frosting, from a tub with spoon…wanna fight about it?!  LOL!

4. What are your favorite childhood Halloween costumes?

My grandma was quite the sewer and many many many of my childhood costumes were made by her.  I also still have most of them and my daughter will get to wear them!

Some of my favorites were Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Bride and Scarlett O’hara!

This intense spoiling has only made it terribly hard for me to find costumes that meet my approval for my children, especially my daughter.  Seriously, I am not buying a Halloween costume that has a picture of the person they are supposed to be on a little button thing on the actual costume.   How ridiculous is that?  They aren’t even trying anymore.  This year’s Ariel costume that is in the store doesn’t even look like Ariel?  I mean, what are we teaching our children that everything has to have glitter and sparkles and rhinestones and sequins?!  It’s so ridiculous!!  *end rant*

5.  What are you looking forward to in October?

I am really looking forward to my Mom coming!  Yippeeee!!!!   We are going to walk around Old Town Alexandria, which I haven’t done yet.  I have to do some research.  And we are going to go to Ford’s Theater…which, Hello!!, who wouldn’t be excited about that?  I’m also hoping to do a little meet-up with a couple of my mil-spouse girls!

that’s me (dark hair) with my mom and dad!  Probably 1989 :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Halloween in June……Costume for 2012 #halloween #costume

Sort of like Christmas in July right?!  Maybe its a new holiday we should come up with, or some kind of sales thing…I dunno, I smell a good marketing campaign.  When you think of costumes most people naturally think of Halloween.  If you have a little girl, about the age of 3 or 4, every day is a costume day!  One day she just started gravitating to them in the store.  It didn’t matter if it was an actual costume or anything pink and frilly.  There is definitely something to be said for Nurture, and how we mold our children, but I’m telling you, there’s a lot of nature involved!  LOL!  I remember my mom telling me about the times I would sleep in my slip and my “clicky shoes”, which is what I called black patent leather mary jane’s.   So I’m happy to say that I’m passing on the girlishness and Ami loves to wear all that stuff, all day long, in bed, eating food…its like pulling teeth to get them off.  We have one rule, “it stays at home.”  So we don’t go to the store or errand running in the dress-up clothes.

When I received the opportunity to review an item from a costume store, and it wasn’t anywhere near Halloween, I wasn’t concerned in the least bit about what I would do with the said item.  I mean, who wouldn’t want a new costume you know what I mean?  So, I took a nice little internet stroll over to Wholesale Costumes to check out the Popular Costumes for 2012.  I naturally checked out some of the Disney costumes that would be sure to catch the eye of my girlie girl.  Some of my favorites were Snow White,  Belle, and Minnie Mouse And for only a little bit more than a costume I could get at my local grocery type store, I can have more variety and, frankly, better quality.  The truth of the matter is I was honestly a little shocked at the quality.  I mean, you know these costumes are usually not the best.  I’ve gotten the ones locally and have a day of playing in them they are starting to come apart.  We can safely say that after a week or so of some good playing this costume has kept up quite nicely, and I was even able to get a stain off of it and get it right back to playing.

We chose the Girls Deluxe Alice In Wonderland costume and it is darling.  It came with the petticoat and a matching headband.  What I most liked about the costume was that, even though it has some unique aspects to it, it looks like the costume from the movie.  It has some added decorations that make it unique and “deluxe” I think.  Some extra frills, some sparkly and ruffles and a picture of Alice, are some of the things that make this a little more “deluxe” then the movie version, but it was enough like it that my little girl knew right away what it was.

Love it: I really appreciate the quality of this item.  For a little more money I can get something nicer then what I might find in the average grocery store.  Its super cute and I appreciate the fact that even though they frilled it up a bit it still looks like the costume from the movie.  I would recommend ordering online from this company if you were looking for some dress-up clothes or you couldn’t find a costume in the store that you were looking for.  You can find so many costumes on here, and last year when I was struggling to find an affordable Captain Hook costume for my son I would have loved to have been able to order from them.

What I might change: The headband it comes with isn’t super high quality and isn’t one-size fits all. The elastic on the waist of the little petticoat was a little big on my daughter, while the rest of the costume fit her well, so that might be something I would change.  And even though the pictures on the bow and the apron of Alice are super cute, its kind of a pet peeve of mine when costumes actually picture the character the costume is of, lol, but it wouldn’t stop me from buying.

All in all I give this 3.75 combat boots from the Cammo Love House!
