Behind the Scenes of the USO Gala

Last month I had the amazing opportunity to attend the USO Gala here in Washington, D.C.  It was probably one of the highlights of the year for me.  Aside from getting to see Mr. Air Force dressed up and shaking hands with the All State Guy, I spent the evening in the company of some of the bravest men, and their beautiful families.  The USO is dedicated to serving those who serve, and they bring together a whole team of those that stand right along side of them.

Behind the scenes of the Gala, the USO partners with P&G so that the spouses, significant others, family and recipients can get some extra special pampering before the evening.  A nice relaxing shave for the men was available, which was a newer addition to the pampering room, as well as make-up and hair for the ladies.  This is such an amazing display of care and support towards our service members and their families.  It is done on a small scale, and there was no hoards of media present at this.  It was a blessing for me to be able to attend and watch these ladies get pampered.  Mostly because I’d been where they were.  Military spouses and families share a special sort of connection.  There is so much between us that doesn’t need to be said because of so many shared experiences.  I admire some of these women though because they had experienced the injury of their husbands, the heroic actions in extremely high stress situations, and yet remained centered.  As I stood watching two in particular, so young and relatively new in their life as a Millie, the love that radiated between them was remarkable.  The strength of their hearts.

This didn’t just go for the spouses of these men.  There were several families, in-laws, parents and sisters present as well.  I knew what they felt for their sons, son-in-laws and brothers.  It is the same feeling that I have when I look at my husband.  It’s a combination of pride and awe.  What they sacrifice for us, the pressure they are under, the figurative and literal mountains they must climb.  The sister and mother of one of the recipients said, “I don’t know how he does it?”

But if you spoke with these gentleman they would tell you that they were just doing their jobs.  This award isn’t for them, its for those that didn’t make it and it’s for every other guy in their unit that would have done the same thing.  That was the sentiment echoed throughout the night, and the thing that stayed with me as I left.  When I spoke with mothers, fathers, sisters and in-laws.  All of them were in awe of their loved one.  Pride poured from them, if not with their words, but their demeanor.  They deserved the pampering and P&G made that happen, without masquerading it before the public.  No press, no shouting it from the rooftops.  The hair and make-up people that are involved in this behind-the-scenes endeavor have been doing it since the beginning (most of them anyway).  They do it once and keep coming back.  Some of them are military connected, but some of them aren’t.  Being a part of this is the highlight of their year, and its not because of any recognition they get.  The joy that they get to see on the faces is worth much more than any press release.

I can’t wait to experience next year, to see the joy on the faces of those that are there.

MOAA and the #MilSpouse Employment Survey #MilitarySupportSeries

As I’m prepping this post (its already Monday) I am glued to my television set watching the coverage of the shooting at the Navy Yard.  It brings back too many memories of the shooting near our old duty station in Nevada.  When our military members are unsafe even at home, it is almost too much to handle.  I have a friend at the Navy Yard so prayers and thoughts for him and his family, and for all those involved especially first responders.
For this week’s Military Monday, Military Support Series, I am highlighting MOAA (Military Officers Association of America).   I have had the extreme pleasure to work with some of the volunteers at some events, and they are the most wonderfully passionate people that I have met.  They are truly here to help you, and are very approachable and know what they are talking about.
MOAA is one of the Nation’s largest and most influential association of military officers.  It is an independent, non-profit, politically nonpartisan organization.  With over 380,000 members from every branch of service – including active duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired, former officers and their families – we are a powerful force, speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of military officers at every stage of their career.  MOAA’s highest priority is providing first-class service to our members.  We are the leading voice on compensation and benefit matters for all members of the military community.  We provide expert advice and guidance to our members.

Membership is open to active duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired and former commissioned officers and warrant officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corp, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  Auxiliary membership is also available to spouses of deceased service members.

As a member you have access to so much support, provided by this amazing organization and their chapters near you.  Assistance is provided in areas of Finance, Health, Education, Professional Development, Pay and Benefits, Careers, Discounts and Travel.   This year MOAA also co-hosted the 2013 Warrior-Family Symposium just last week.  I was unable to attend, but have to keeping up with all the information from the event on MOAA’s website.  You can access video from the event on the site.
One of the main reasons why I chose to cover MOAA this week is because of the #MilSpouseSurvey that is going on right now.  This survey is not just for MOAA members, or the spouses of Officers.  We know that the employment of military spouses is a huge issue right now.  In the milspouse universe right now, its everywhere.  Everyone is working on it I feel like.  I was just at a hiring fair directed specifically towards spouses.  MOAA is doing its part, partnering with several other spouse and business organizations, to find out how to best address this significant issue in our community.  Please take the survey, and watch for its release in Spring of 2014.
Thanks for stopping by today.  If you can’t use this information please pass it on to someone you know!
Connect with MOAA on social media as well – Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Military Support Series – Military Spouse JD Network #MilitaryMonday #MilitarySupportSeries

Welcome to another Military Support Series post and Military Monday!!  I love being able to share some of these great resources with you all.  Hopefully these are things you might not normally have heard of and this is helping someone out there.  Please make sure to click the “military resources” tab up top and spread the word.  If you’re stopping by for the first time please let me know so I can return the favor; and as always my mailbox is always, always open if you have any questions.

What is Military Spouse J.D. Network?

The Military Spouse JD Network (MSJDN) was formed in Summer 2011 by two military spouses frustrated with the challenges of maintaining a legal career that seemed incompatible with the military lifestyle. They formed MSJDN to advocate for licensing accommodations for military spouses, including bar membership without additional examination, as well as network with other military spouses with JDs. Since 2011, the membership of MSJDN has swelled to over 750 members and supporters.  In February 2012, with the support of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, the ABA House of Delegates adopted a resolution supporting changes in state licensing rules for military spouses with law degrees. MSJDN supports such a rule change in each jurisdiction.

Their Communications Director, Lori Volkman, happens to be a great bloggy friend of mine.  We both share a heart for advocating for military families.  She is pretty much totally awesome and I was lucky enough to spend some time with her in D.C.  I know that she’s been working her rear off as a mom, a Naval Reserve spouse, and a Deputy Prosecutor in the State of Washington.  She is how I came to hear about the J.D. Network and all they do.  Jobs and Education, as it relates to the Military Spouse is such a huge topic of conversation these days, especially with Joining Forces making it a priority.  Making it easier for spouses to maintain any credentials they need when moving between states would do a lot to ease the amount of stress that just comes with the territory as a military spouse.  MSJDN is doing its part to accomplish this.
Because of the tireless work of the Spouses at MSJDN, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina and Texas have passed resolutions for admission of military spouse attorneys without examination.  States considering these changes include: California, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Maryland.  The purpose of this resolution is to aid military spouse in attorneys in a seamless transition when they are forced to move to a new state because of military orders.  *make sure to visit the MSJDN website to read more about what they are doing and about the resolution itself.*
How can you get involved?
If you are a military spouse with a law degree I definitely 100% encourage you to join the Military Spouse JD Network.  It will provide you a network of fellow spouses experiencing the same things you are, and you can help make a difference for spouses in your career field.  If you simply want to help, or find out more, and get involved, please visit their membership page.

I miss that girl!

MilitaryOneClick is a wonderful resource for someone living the military life.  I think it is perfectly set-up for a newbie.  Entering into this life can be really overwhelming, and if you have no prior experience, aren’t near any installations or have no friends with military experience the task can seem daunting for sure.  All you’d have to come across is MilitaryOneSource and it would make the experience get off on the right foot.

Thanks MilitaryOneClick!!  Make sure to check out there site and follow them on their social media platforms!

Military Support Series *Veteran CareGiver*

Last week I had the amazing pleasure of hanging out with some great ladies at the Care Giver’s Resource Fair at Walter Reed.  I had never heard of Veteran Caregiver, so I knew I had to add their group to my list of resources to share with my amazing readers.  So lets hear a little bit more about this amazing group.
The basics of it is this….what happens “AFTER”?  That seems to be a simple question, but in reality, for many veterans and Caregivers its the complete opposite of simple.  What do I/We do now?  That’s where Veteran Caregiver comes into play.
This site is a bridge for caregivers and veterans alike. It is a safe place to air questions and frustrations on and offline, but we also provide individualized assistance when you’ve hit the wall. As a veteran or a caregiver of a veteran, your life may be significantly altered by injury, illness, or aging. If you’re feeling isolated or alone, want/need people around you who “get it”, and you’d benefit from networking with peers and professionals, community health and recovery resources, you’ve come to the only site of its kind. VeteranCaregiver is here to fill the need for acknowledgement, mentoring as only peers can do, and to provide accessible support from others who share or can address your challenges.- Linda Kreter -Founder & CEO
It is a virtual community that provides a connection.  With so much of this world “virual”, with social media being the way to go, I think this is a stupendous idea.  So many of my friends have been found and developed through social media.  Its like the key to the city for Military Spouses, especially those of us who have been situated in isolated areas as I was for so many years.
Simply go to Veteran Caregiver’s website and register to start!
